Bengaluru Metro Phase 3 is one of the city’s largest upcoming transport projects designed to improve travel across western Bengaluru. The expansion includes two elevated metro corridors covering nearly 44.5 kilometres with a total of 31 stations. Approved in 2024, the project is expected to significantly improve public transport access in fast growing residential and commercial zones. Once completed, Bengaluru’s metro network is projected to reach around 222 kilometres, making urban travel more connected and efficient across multiple parts of the city.
The project is being developed to reduce pressure on major roads and improve connectivity between important junctions. It also supports the city’s long term urban mobility plans by linking residential areas, employment centres, and interchange stations through a wider metro network.
A major milestone for Bengaluru Metro Phase 3 is the international financial support secured for the project. Long term external funding has been arranged to support metro construction, system development, and operational infrastructure. The agreement includes a long repayment structure and a grace period, helping authorities move forward with large scale construction activities.
Following the funding approval, several important tenders have already been initiated for viaduct construction, signalling systems, rolling stock, and related infrastructure. Around 18.58 kilometres of work has already been covered under initial tender packages. Planning and technical studies for the project began several years ago, with feasibility assessments completed in 2016 and detailed reports prepared from 2020 onward. Construction activities are expected to begin in late 2025, while the latest projected completion timeline extends to the early 2030s.
Phase 3 consists of two key corridors known as the Orange Line and the Silver Line. The Orange Line stretches about 32 kilometres between Kempapura and JP Nagar 4th Phase. It passes through major areas including Hebbal, Peenya, Mysuru Road, and JP Nagar. This corridor will become an important part of Bengaluru’s first circular metro connectivity system when integrated with the future Blue Line.
The Silver Line will connect Hosahalli and Kadabagere across a distance of around 12.5 kilometres. Several interchange stations are planned across both corridors to improve passenger movement between metro lines. Important interchange locations include Kempapura, Mysuru Road, Sumanahalli, Goraguntepalya, Hosahalli, and JP Nagar 4th Phase.
One of the biggest highlights of Bengaluru Metro Phase 3 is the planned double decker structure that combines a flyover and metro corridor over nearly 37 kilometres. A major stretch between Dalmia Circle and Hebbal is expected to become the city’s longest flyover corridor. The project will also feature some of India’s tallest metro stations at Mysuru Road and Goraguntepalya.
Future expansion plans under Phase 3A include a new corridor connecting Hebbal and Sarjapura. Overall, Phase 3 is expected to improve daily commuting, reduce road congestion, and strengthen Bengaluru’s long term public transport infrastructure.
