The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $230 million loan to modernize and expand Chennai's water supply and sanitation infrastructure, marking a significant step toward improving essential urban services for the city's growing population. The project is expected to benefit approximately 4.5 million residents across the Greater Chennai area. The investment aims to address long-standing infrastructure gaps in one of India's fastest-growing metropolitan regions. Under the project, more than 170 kilometres of new water supply and sewer pipelines will be constructed, while seven water pumping stations and 38 sewer pumping stations will be upgraded to improve the efficiency and reliability of water distribution and wastewater management.
A key highlight of the initiative is the introduction of a comprehensive ring-main water distribution system, making Chennai the first Indian city to adopt this closed-loop network. The system is designed to maintain balanced water pressure, improve supply reliability, ensure equitable water distribution, and enhance resilience against climate-related challenges. In addition to physical infrastructure upgrades, the project will introduce digital technologies for real-time monitoring, data-driven operations, and improved customer service. Advanced equipment will also replace hazardous manual sewer inspections, enabling faster blockage detection while enhancing worker safety.
According to ADB, the project aligns with the Government of India's urban development initiatives, including the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0 and the Urban Challenge Fund.
