The ambitious Knowledge, Wellbeing, and Innovation (KWIN) City project in Bengaluru has officially moved from planning into active development. Spread across 5,800 acres between Dabaspet and Doddaballapur, this large-scale initiative is designed to become a self-sustained hub for education, healthcare, and research. Announced in September 2024 by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and supported by Industries Minister MB Patil, the project reflects Karnataka’s push toward building a strong knowledge-based economy.
Infrastructure work for Phase 1 has already started, with major components expected to be completed by December 2026. According to officials, Phase 2 is scheduled for completion by May 2027. The overall development plan includes multiple phases, with tenders for Phases 1, 2, and 3 finalized in March 2026 and on-ground work expected to begin by mid-2026.
Authorities aim to complete nearly 75% to 90% of the entire project by 2029. Meanwhile, preparations for later stages are also underway, as the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board has already applied for environmental and planning approvals for Phase 5.
KWIN City is strategically located along the Satellite Town Ring Road, which ensures strong road connectivity. It is also positioned about 50 km from Kempegowda International Airport, making it accessible within approximately 45 minutes.
To support future workforce demand, the government is reviewing plans to extend the metro network up to Doddaballapur. The project also includes essential infrastructure such as roads, bridges, drainage systems, and water treatment facilities. Sustainability is a major focus. The city will feature a 465-acre solar power installation and advanced rainwater harvesting systems, expected to meet around 50% of its water needs.
KWIN City is being developed as a global education and research destination. Agreements have already been signed with several institutions, including St John’s University, Dayanand Sagar University, KLE University, PES University, Sharda University, RV College, and ISBR. International partnerships are also emerging, with interest from institutions like the University of Liverpool. These collaborations aim to establish world-class campuses, research centers, and healthcare facilities within the city. The first phase alone is expected to generate around 10,000 jobs, while the long-term vision targets up to 100,000 high-value employment opportunities.
To support future growth, authorities have identified an additional 2,100 acres in nearby areas such as Chikkabelavangala and Rampura. At the same time, real estate activity in the Doddaballapur–Nelamangala corridor has increased significantly, with land prices ranging between ₹2,800 and ₹3,500 per square foot.
With an estimated investment of ₹40,000 crore, KWIN City represents a major step toward Karnataka’s goal of becoming a $1 trillion economy. As development progresses steadily, the project is expected to reshape the region into a leading center for innovation, education, and wellbeing.
